Dr Thompson, together with MRI Radiologist Suresh De Silva and his research team at St George Hospital/ University of New South Wales, have just published a new method for being able to distinguish cancer from benign lumps in the kidney using a combination of cutting edge MRI scans in one.
The system aims to allow doctors to avoid unnecessary invasive biopsy or removal of a kidney in men and women who have an incidentally detected renal mass.
The next step will be a multi-centre prospective research trial to validate this novel system in a large and diverse group of people who present to their urologist with a renal mass (lump on the kidney).
