Recently in 2020, Dr Thompson and colleagues published the trial design for a prospective, multicentre trial of Ga68-PSMA PET CT scans in combination with multi-parametric MRI scans to see if it is possible to improve the accuracy of detecting prostate cancer. MRI alone detects 85-90% but is unable to reliably detect all cancers; Dr Thompson and his research colleagues believe that combining MRI with PSMA scans may be able to detect up to 98-99% of cancers, such that most unnecessary prostate biopsies can be avoided.
A link to the study overview is below and enrolments are progressing well, so results are expected to be available in 2021.
